History of the Cajuns: Encyclopedia of Cajun Life
Death

Once a person had died, there was a period of mourning and a quick funeral.  The body was set out in the home for mourners.  With no preservation techniques, the person was often buried within a day or two.  Family and/or friends would construct a wooden casket and a procession would then take the deceased to the cemetery.
